In-Home Therapy (Child First)

Child First

Child First is intended to reach the most vulnerable young children and families at the earliest possible time. Child First teams work with families in the home to prevent and heal emotional and behavioral disturbances, as well as developmental and learning problems, that can result from traumatic early childhood experiences.

Child First uses a two-generation approach to serve:

- Children through age 6 who have experienced any problem that threatens healthy development, especially emotional/behavioral problems, developmental/learning problems, abuse/neglect, or trauma

- Parents / Caregivers with multiple challenges such as depression and other mental health problems, substance use, domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, or child protective service involvement

Child First utilizes a two-prong approach to treatment by pairing up a Family Resource Partner with a Mental Health Clinician. Family Resource Partners reduce toxic stress by connecting children and families with needed community-based services and supports, while the Mental Health Clinicians facilitate the development of a responsive, nurturing relationship between the child and caregiver that can protect the child's developing brain.

The goals of Child First are to heal the damage caused by trauma and adversity, to create a protective and nurturing caregiver-child relationship.
