Event Recap: Celebrate! Kids First

Our second annual awareness event was a huge success! Under beautiful sunny skies, we spent a day educating attendees about the important services we offer at our center, as well as ways to keep their own children safe. Hundreds of blue ribbons were distributed for Child Abuse Awareness, and all attendees were able to be “a kid for a day” with a bounce house, rock wall, facepainting, and more. This event would not have been possible without generous sponsorship and donations from Vector CSP, Pepsi, and Albemarle Distributing, and the outstanding support of our volunteers. A special thank-you to the Coast Guard Spouses’ Club, the students at the Coast Guard Aviation Technical Training School, and the active duty members of the band EPIRB:  we love our Coasties!  We are looking forward to repeating the fun in Spring 2011! Please e-mail to find out how you can become involved!

Albemarle Hospital: Supporting Child Victims                Several years ago, Kids First proudly announced the addition of child medical examinations provided onsite by pediatrician and child abuse expert Dr. Jennifer Brown. The addition of these services has made a priceless impact on our child victims, who no longer have to be examined in the emergency room. The task of bringing these types of examinations in-house was a bit daunting, however, with the necessary purchase of equipment and supplies and the question of “Who is going to pay for all of this???” One answer came through Albemarle Hospital when they agreed to provide laboratory services to our victims free of charge. This generous offer has become an extraordinary gift for our clients. While at first we expected to perhaps provide medical examinations to a few children each month, the demand for these services has surpassed our expectations, and Dr. Brown sees children on a weekly basis, and has provided services to 43 victims already in 2010.To thank Albemarle Hospital for their generous support and allow staff to see exactly what they are supporting, Kids First hosted an Open House for Albemarle Hospital staff. At this event, we presented a plaque of thanks to Sharon Tanner, President and CEO of Albemarle Health. The plaque, which includes a drawing from a victim seen at Kids First, reads “Thank you for helping us when we are down.” On behalf of all of the victims provided with services, Kids First would like to express our continued gratitude to Albemarle Hospital for their amazing contribution.

Donor Updates                                      Kids First is a non-profit agency and relies heavily on community support. We would like to recognize several of our donors for their generous contributions to our agency.

Kids First loves Dixieland Speedway! Red and Debbie Swain, owners of the track, have been such wonderful supporters of ours over many years, and their generosity just keeps flowing! They designated a recent race as “Kids First Night” and allowed us to come out and join in the fun at the track and raise money through a 50/50 drawing. Thanks to Red & Debbie and the whole gang at Dixieland for continually helping us to “Drive Out Child Abuse!”

Longtime supporters of Kids First, the River City Cycling Club recently contributed $500 to Kids First through funds raised at their Tarheel Century Ride. A huge thank-you for their gift!

Another frequent donor, Mamie Hoffer of the Hoffer Gallery recently raffled off a beautiful flower arrangement to benefit Kids First. Through this effort, we received a generous donation of $500. A heartfelt thanks to the Hoffer Gallery for “putting Kids First” at their store and in their hearts!
